I know you like to catch up now and then with news of the Kuddly Kinnocks, alias the Welsh Cash-Machine; whose favourite daughter-in-law, Gucci Helle has just become the least liked PM Denmark has ever known, with a 17% approval rating after 9 months in the job.
Until the end of this month she is Pres of Europe too, but the meeja, and Europe, seem to have lost interest in that. Much as the electorate here has lost patience with her lack of, well….almost every quality required of its PM. Other than being photogenic of course.
She promised that the Good Ship Dania would sail into fair weather after she took the helm despite the buffeting of economic storms from all points on the compass. She would ensure growth and prosperity without reducing the welfare burden but the first bellwether was her failure to get agreement to a road-pricing scheme for Copenhagen, interpreted as a blatant increase in taxation for commuters; followed by a disastrous plan to reduce public holiday entitlements. So Captain Helle is now bailing fast but unable to find fellow bailers among her coalition crew.
Meanwhile the Chinese Pres is here on a state visit as part of an offensive to seize assets and know-how from ailing Danish businesses. And Helle, ever the pragmatist, seems to have forgotten her mantra about human rights abuses in China.
But with true Kinnock grit she’ll be up for a spell as a Commissioner in Brussels as soon as her vessel sinks at home. Good girl.
